What are the Different Bikini Wax Styles?

With summer around the corner, you may be starting to think about the different swimsuits and bikini styles you are going to opt for and, of course, the type of bikini wax style you want.

While shaving may be considered a faster method of hair removal; waxing ensures you are hair free for longer without having to risk the possibility of cuts and discomfort in such a sensitive area. Waxing can also be an excellent method to ensure certain areas such as your bikini line are neat and shaped exactly how you want them.

If you have never had a bikini wax before, you may be uncertain about what style to choose. There are many different options for a bikini wax and ultimately what style you go for is completely down to personal taste.

While there are certain styles, such as the ‘French’, the  ‘Brazilian’ and the ‘Hollywood’, which we recommend should be left to the professionals, there are others which can be mastered at home.*

Ultimately two main factors determine the difference between bikini waxing styles;

1)            How much hair is removed

2)            Which areas hair is left on

Have a look at this handy guide to help you to decipher those salon treatment list, or to give you some ideas for styles to try at home with a little help from Veet!

 Bikini

Bikini Wax (American Wax)

This is considered a standard, or more basic, type of bikini wax. This is simply a ‘tidy up’ that removes any hair that could be seen while wearing a bikini or a swim suit – so from the upper thighs and just outside the panty line, and also from the top that might peek over the waistband.

 Extended Bikini

Extended Bikini  (Full Bikini Line Wax)

This removes all of the hair that would be taken off with the standard bikini, but takes it deeper around the legs, and may shape it into more of a triangle by taking more off of the top. This type of waxing is good for those who want to keep some hair down there, but want it to look neat.

 French Wax Veet

French Wax*

If you feel that the above methods do not remove the amount of hair you want, you may want to consider the French wax. However we recommend that you leave the French Wax to a professional. This takes most the hair from the front, including the more intimate areas, leaving just a ‘landing strip’ on top. This wax doesn’t touch the areas behind, so is perfect for those looking to be smooth up front, without removing any hair from the back.

 Brazilian Wax

Brazilian*

A popular feature on most salon treatment list and another one that we recommend you to leave to a professional is the Brazilian wax. Although it is very similar to the French Wax in that it removes most of the hair from the front, leaving a small strip or triangle, this also takes all the hair off the back. This is the perfect style for wearing a thong bikini, as no hair will be visible front or back. Brazilian hair removal is a popular choice when it comes to styling and bikini waxing. There are multiple types of Brazilian wax, and you may come across names such as “The Bermuda Triangle” (an upside-down triangle), and the “The Desert Island” - which leaves just a small amount of hair for anyone who does not want to be completely hair free - but they all remove hair from the same areas.

 Hollywood

Hollywood*

If you are feeling daring enough for this look, we definitely  recommend that you leave it to a professional. The Hollywood bikini wax is just about as far as you can go with bikini waxing, and is the style to go for if you don’t want any hair left down there at all. It completely removes hairs from both the front and back.

Bikini Waxing at Home

While styles such as the French, Brazilian and Hollywood should be left to professionals, as they deal with some very sensitive areas, the less extreme styles can be achieved with great effect at home. Veet’s bikini wax strips are perfect for tidying up that area.

With Veet Easy-GelWax strips, there is no need to warm the strips between your hands anymore. Just apply the strip to the area, and pull away with the easy-grip tab, taking the hair with it. These can be cut to fit your body’s contours so that you can get the right finish for your bikini line.

For more substantial hair removal, the EasyWax™ Roll on system is a device which both heats and applies the wax for you, using the specific bikini head applicator. The warm wax is a great option because the warmth opens up your pores, so the hairs can be removed quickly and efficently – making the whole session easier, and a bit more comfortable. You can precisely apply the wax to remove only the areas of hair that you want to, and then use the provided fabric strips to remove the wax and the hairs, leaving you summer ready (however far away that might seem!)

How to Prepare For Waxing

You do not have to do much in order to prepare for a wax. Remember always to follow the instructions on the packaging and test a discreet area at least 24 hours before to avoid any skin reaction. One of the most important things to always ensure, however, is that the area you are going to wax is clean and dry, regardless of where it is. So, after you have been in the shower, make sure you have thoroughly dried the area, and maybe even use some unperfumed baby powder to remove any excess moisture that might be on the skin.

The Waxing Process

When you are completely ready to begin, apply the wax or wax strips, depending on your product of choice, and pull energetically against the direction of hair growth to ensure efficient hair removal.

Waxing After-Care

As always there are a few after care options you may want to consider if you are waxing at home in order to maintain beautifully smooth skin and avoid irritation or ingrown hairs. Read ‘Things to Avoid After a Wax ’ for more guidance on waxing after care techniques.
